From the beginning, music was always a big part of Robb West's life, and he had the opportunity to experience music from a wide range of genres. In his early childhood his mother and father listened to jazz of all flavors, and his older brothers were into modern rock, classic rock, metal, country and "seventies" pop music. After moving back to the USA in 1981 he started to really listen to music, and along the way his ear was turned on to classical music, the blues, and specifically bands like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and The Dave Brubeck Quartet. It was also during this time that he met a local Virginia jazz musician George Melvin. George, a pianist and organist, became a good family friend and Robb's musical mentor of sorts. Taking George's lead, Robb tried the piano, but not too much avail. After his unsuccessful attempt at studying piano he decided to try his hand at the drums. Playing the drums was the right decision at the time, it gave him the rhythmic foundation that would play a big part in the style of music that he would create later. Around the age of nineteen Robb helped form a rock band, but soon tired of being "just" a drummer and not having much to do with the music the band was creating. So he decided to pick up the acoustic guitar, but unfortunately the band parted ways. But adversity gave way to opportunity, the opportunity to create music on his own, and push his creative instincts. Writing music for himself, writing for the love the music, and for anyone with an ear to listen.
