Month 21 - Week 4 (84)

Monday - a Meeting (1/2 hour)
Tuesday – a Meeting (1/2 hour)
Wednesday – a Lecture (4 hours) (dress rehearsal)
Thursday – a Lecture (4 hours) (presentation)
Friday – a Lecture (2 hours) (final wrap-up)

This is the last week of classes for me! I would like to say that I’m glad it’s over, but that would not be the whole truth, a part of me wants to cling to the certainty of being in school. Knowing that I have classes next week was a very comforting feeling. Now the reality is that I have to get a JOB! NOOOOOOOOOOO!

So this past week was a little stressful, trying to tie up the final loose ends of the business plan for class was more involved than I had imagined. The team worked well on it and we had our presentation on Thursday night. We had a panel of instructors and industry professionals that listened to our presentation and who asked questions of each team. Each team had 9 minutes to present their plan and then there was a 5 minute question and answer period. Our team was second to present, and for the most part we did really well on the presentation. The question and answer portion went fairly well, but one of the panelists was very critical of the plan. He was a pain for not only our group but for every group! At the end of the evening he told everyone that he hadn’t seen any business plans to invest in! What a jerk! Anyway, that was the last “real” class for the program.

On Friday we had class to return our laptops and to vote for the Advanced Achiever Award recipient. Well, if you have been reading this blog for any length of time you may remember that I was a bit upset when I was not even nominated for the honor when I graduated from Recording Arts. This time the process was a bit different, instead of the instructors picking the nominees for the award the class nominated then voted on those selected. Four people were selected, Dacey Jacobsen, Adam Purdey, Joey Defilis, and me (thanks to my team mates and Joey). I was a bit upset when Joey was selected for the honor, because I let my pride get the better of me! Joey asked me to help him with the speech that he would have to give, which now that I think of it was a very great honor he gave to me. After that basically class was over and the whole thing was a very anti-climatic event. Well I hope that graduation will be a better finish to this past 9 months!

I will make one last entry after graduation, to wrap the whole school thing. I guess my second childhood is over now! I think I’m gonna go cry!

Month 21 - Week 3 (83)

Monday - two Lectures (8 hours)
Tuesday – a Lecture (4 hours)
Wednesday – a Lecture (4 hours)
Thursday – a Lecture (4 hours)
Friday – a Lecture (4 hours)

So this week was more of the same from last week, but toward the end of the week the stress level went WAY down. We have now officially finished all of the content for the business plan, and next week will just be tweaking it.

On Friday we had a guest speaker in class. Donna Dowless was a former Senior VP for Ticketmaster and is also an artist. She started in the entertainment industry in the mid 1960’s in Washington D.C. at RFK Stadium. She worked her way up to the position of venue manager of a venue here in Central Florida, before being hired by Ticketmaster. She had the opportunity to meet and work with bands like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Prince. I thought that she was the best guest speaker that I have had the privilege to hear during my time at Full Sail.

Well next week looks to be easier than the past few weeks. We have to meet with our instructor to review our final changes, do a run through of our presentation, actually do the presentation, and wrap up the month by turning our computer back in to the school. That’s it… no more after that… it is so close to being over! I’d be lying if I said that I was ready to stop this school experience, there is something to be said for knowing what tomorrow brings!

One more week… So, play that song one more time for me!

Month 21 - Week 2 (82)

Monday - a Lecture (4 hours)
Tuesday – a Lecture (4 hours +2 extra hours working on plan)
Wednesday – a Lecture (4 hours +4 extra hours working on plan)
Thursday – a Lecture (4 hours +2 extra hours working on plan)
Friday – a Lecture (4 hours +1 extra hour working on plan)

Soooo, I said last time that it was easy… I was wrong! This class is really doing a number on me; I am a bit of a nervous wreck because of it! I can’t wait for this month to be over! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Let me digress. The stress of doing this entire plan in a month added to the fact that only 10% of my final grade is NOT dependant on a team grade has got me in a constant state of nervous knots, which is not cool. Let me state most emphatically that I think my project team is great, our group might be the best in class, but I have never been good at letting go and trusting others to do the work. I have decided that I cannot try to do every thing on this project, for a few reasons; firstly it is a group project and every one in the group is capable of doing the work, secondly because I simply cannot do it all myself, and lastly I need to learn to trust others more.

So this week the way we as a group worked on labs has evolved from last week. It started out that we all sat around and worked together on each and every little thing, which was a total mess! We would be going strong for about 30 minutes and then people would start falling off the task, looking on the Internet or just staring off into space. Well by mid-week Russ Russ just started working on stuff on his own, and by the end of the week we were working in two groups just trying to knock the stuff out as efficiently as we could. This system seems to work better! I do the editing on the labs with Genine (she’s my wife!) in the evening, she and I try to take what the group came up with and make it consistent and verify the content has all the information that the lab required. This process seems to work, but I have been keeping Genine up way past her bed time (especially since she goes to work before 6 a.m.!

The business plan itself seems to be coming together very well. The plan could be better is areas, but because of the limited amount of time we have to complete each section of the plan it is hard to get all of the research that is needed. We have done well so far on these labs, only having had 0.5% taken off of one lab. The labs are each worth 3 or 5 point toward the overall grade in the class, so each point taken off a lab is a point taken off the overall grade. The labs together are worth 60%, the final plan is worth 15%, the final presentation is worth 15%, and our participation is worth 10%. So I guess I have my work still cut out for me.

I hope I don’t get an ulcer this week!

Month 21 - Week 1 (81)

Monday - a Lecture (4 hours)
Tuesday – Off
Wednesday – a Lecture (4 hours)
Thursday – Holiday break
Friday – Holiday break

Well, it’s finally here, my last month of college! So this week was pretty short, only two lectures, so there is not much to talk about. The class is set up a bit different from all of the classes we have had in the past. The lecture is only between 45 minutes to an hour, and then we work on lab assignments in our business plan teams. So the majority of class is actually putting the business plan together. I have mentioned my team member before, but let’s go over them again, shall we! Mike Boss, Jenn Easterwood, Russ Meyer, and Vince Napoli have been my team mates since the first day of class for the bachelors program. So far the class seems pretty easy, but I am sure that will change! On the positive side, there are no tests this month, but we do have a major presentation to do in front of business people from the industry. That will be very interesting!

Well I’ll talk at you more after the Thanksgiving break!

Month 20 - Week 4 (80)

Monday - a Lecture (4 hours)
Tuesday – a Lecture (4 hours)
Wednesday – an Event (8 hours)
Thursday – a Lab (4 hours)
Friday – a Lecture (4 hours)
Saturday – a Lecture and a lab (8 hours)

So I actually get to write about this past month now that it is over. It was an interesting month, not too stressful, not too hard, but definitely a lot of work. First off let me go over the Product and Artist Management class. I really enjoyed this class, mostly because it was all about actually putting a live charity show together, and actually running the event. First off we, as a class, got to select a theme for the show, which ended up being a Vegas theme. Then we selected the genre of music that would be showcased at the event, which in the end was rock. Once those two items were decided upon we broke up into four groups to organize the event, A&R/Venue, Graphics, Sponsorship, and Promotions.

I decided to join the A&R/Venue group, mostly to prevent members of the class from having their own bands in the show. As a group we decided on a number of local bands that we wanted to approach to play at the show, but through the first two weeks we had bad luck with the bands. Some couldn’t make it the night of the show, and others agreed and then backed out when paying gigs came along. We finally had to let the classmates who had bands join the show so that we would have enough bands.

Well, the day of the event was this past Wednesday, and it went well but not without incident. One of the bands that we had signed for the show started jerking us around on the day of the show and caused us to have to rearrange the band order so that they could play last. Fortunately for us the band that was scheduled to play last agreed to go on earlier. Most of the members of the band that was jerking us around didn’t show up until just minutes before their set, making most of us really rather irritated. During the show I was one of the members of my group who were responsible for switching the stage from one act to another, which was a lot of work but I really enjoyed it. When all was said and done I thought that the show was great, I had some issues with the bands, particularly one of the class bands, but we worked through it and made the best of the situation.

We did some other stuff in the class but not much I really care to mention. I really liked my instructor, Jerry Waller, he’s a promoter, a manager, and a really interesting individual, and I think I learned more from what he did more than what he said over the course of the month. We also got the chance to hear from Tim Coons an independent A&R rep who came in to speak to our class. This was a guy that worked with some of the boy bands from the nineties before they made it big, which doesn’t really endear him to me personally, but he had a lot of interesting things to say about the music business, and he even gave some of the guys some freelance work to do.

The other class was Information Systems and E-Commerce, a class that is designed to explain the use of the Internet to make your business more successful. It was a slightly boring class, but I tried to make the best out of it. One of the main parts of the class was on designing your own website. In fact Full Sail bought a domain name and web hosting for each member of the class. I chose to get the domain name for our final project business idea, Inn Session Studios (http://www.innsessionstudios.com). I have some web design experience, having designed this site (along with my good friend and artist/web designer Matt Tyree) and a few others, so I ended up spending a lot of time helping my friends with their sites. I even picked up some new skills from some of the better designers in class. So, all in all this was not a bad class.

On a more personal note, I’m tired! I’m getting tired of the wear that I put on myself for the grades. I’m a little tired of the guys and gals that I have to see every day. I’m tired of the stress of not really knowing what’s going to happen after I graduate. I’m just plain tired! I only have four more weeks before this journey is finally over. It started about two years ago in State College, Pennsylvania with a decision to follow a dream. It really got going twenty months ago when I walked into my first day of class for Recording Arts. Eight months ago I move into the bachelors program, and today I start my last month of classes (as it is about 1am on Monday morning). In a way I really just want this month to be over, but in another I’m sad to see the end is finally here. I was talking to a classmate (Katie Pierre) after a class this week and she said that it was almost time to get back to the real world. I just shook my head and told her that the real world sucks! I was joking in a way, but I think that after my history with layoffs and being out of work for months at a time, the thought of going back into that reality is somewhat disheartening to me. I guess it is just an inevitably that I have to face and plan for.

One last subject before I close out this month. My friends in class are all pretty great, mostly because they put up with my crap, Mike, Jenn, Russ and Vince especially! I am such a major pain at times, especially when it comes to my grades. For me nothing less than an “A” will do, and I am pretty vocal about that, but I never mean for it to sound like I am better than any of them, because I know that I am not. I simply have a fear of failure as many people do, but everyone has a different definition of failure. For me it’s getting less than an “A”, for someone else it may be a “C”, and for others it’s actually failing. I guess what I’m saying is that I hope that through all of the stressing that I do over my grades does not make others around me think that I am judging their performance. I guess I should try to tone down what I say about my own performance around others in class, because I’d rather these people remember me as a hard worker and not as a “holier than thou” type.

Well, Final Project is next, Final Project is last… wish me luck!

Monday - a Lecture (4 hours)
Tuesday – a Lecture (4 hours)
Wednesday – a Lecture (4 hours)
Thursday – a Lecture (4 hours)
Friday – a final exam (2 hours)
Saturday – a final quiz (2 hours)

OK, so here’s the deal… this month was HARD! The hardest month by far, but not for the reasons you might think. Statistics was a hard class, especially with the way his grades worked; each question on each test was worth one point of the overall grade. So if you missed more than 5 questions combined on ALL of the tests and labs it would give you a “B” (95% - 100% is an “A"). By the last day of statistics class you could cut the tension in the room with knife! Some of the guys in class seemed to just give up at the end, kind of a “why even bother?” mentality. I was really stressed because for me to keep my 4.0 GPA meant that I could not miss more than that 5 points, so I was a bit worried after the third exam when I had missed 3 questions between the three exams. That meant that I would have to get a 100 on the last lab and the last exam to keep my “A". Well I got my 100 on the exam, but I have to wait till next week to get my lab grade. I’ll let you know what happens (update: got a 100% on the lab).

As far as the Publishing class goes, it was a bit easier than statistics but we did have to do a presentation for our business plan. Our presentation rocked! For some reason one of the pages that I printed out for the paper, that went along with the presentation, didn’t print out fully so we got 2 point taken off for the presentation. We would have gotten a 100 if I hadn’t screwed the paper up. That really irritates me, because I don’t like causing my group members to not get the grade they deserved. Other than that the class was good, I found it pretty informative.

On a weird note for the month… On Thursday of this week I had an unusual conversation with a class mate, Dacy Jacobsen, who is the other 4.0 student in class. She asked me if had any “B’s” in the program… I said no. Then she asked me if I was going to get a “B” in Statistics… I said that I might but that I had a 97% going into the final exam. She told me that the best she could do in the class was a “B"… then she said, and I quote, “I might as well not even bother going to graduation!". Then she went back to her seat. This is the second “real” conversation I have ever had with her, and I find it peculiar that she only talks to me when she’s concerned about my grades compared to hers. I guess that she really wanted to be Valedictorian for the class, a feeling that I can totally relate to! I really wanted to be the valedictorian for my recording arts class, and I really thought that my buddy Tommy Wingo would get it, which really had me depressed about the situation. Of course I just barely beat out Tommy and my other friend Ben Wheeler-Harsh, both 4.0 students, and was honored with the valedictorian award. I can empathize with her feelings on this, but I have to question the “not going to graduation” statement. I hope that she sees that there is more to this than the award; I had to come to my peace with that realization myself. There is still an opportunity for her… I could still yet get a “B", but even if I don’t she may be eligible to receive the salutatorian award or the class appointed speaker award. I guess well have to wait and see if she goes to graduation or not… I hope she chooses to go!

Next month we get… Product and Artist Management, and Information Systems and E-Commerce… YEAH!

Back at you next week… beam me up Scotty!
